Oslo. Pop. 557,052. Currency - Norwegian krone. Language – Norwegian. Time Zone GMT + 2 hours. Airport – Gardermoen OSL. Best Time to go – all year round destination, but has cold winters. Oslo is the capital and largest city in Norway. The city centre of Oslo is situated at the end of the Oslofjord from where the city sprawls out both to the north and to the south on both sides of the fjord. According to ancient Norse sagas Oslo was founded in 1049. In 1624, a fire devastated old Oslo, and the city was moved some kilometres to the west, to gain protection from the imposing fortress at Akershus. The Oslo fjord is an inlet of the Skagerrak bay, stretching inland from the North Sea towards Øresund and the Baltic Sea. Oslo has an impressive archipelago of islands, which in summer becomes the city's favoured playground. Places to go and things to see include: The Royal Palace; The University of Oslo; Oslo Cathedral; Kirkeristen (old bazaar); City Hall; Akershus festning (medieval castle); Holmenkollen (famous ski jump); Vigeland Sculpture Park; Henrik Ibsen Museum; Munch Museum; Nobel Peace Centre; Viking ship museum; Norwegian Maritime Museum; Kon-Tiki museum; The Fram-museum; Karl Johans gate (main city drag); and The Botanical garden. Many visitors will find Oslo to be very expensive so bring some wads of cash. Do try the sea food platter and/or salmon salad.

Oslo - wikitravel

Oslo is the capital of Norway. The history of the city can be traced back over 1000 years. In 1624, a fire devastated old Oslo, and the city was moved some kilometres west, to gain protection from the fortress at Akershus. Chances are, if you are going to Norway, Oslo may not be your primary target, as Norway's nature is more exciting in other parts of the country. Nevertheless, Oslo has plenty of sights, good nightlife and is worth seeing.
