Ostende was first established as a fishing and trading harbour in the province of Wset Flanders. In 1846 it became a transit port for the UK when a first ferry service sailed to Dover. This route has largely been superseded by Calais in France with Ostende serving the port of Ramsgate in England. However, Ostende has maintained and expanded its position as "The Queen of the Belgian sea-side resorts" with increased visitor numbers. A relatively new group to Ostende are the windsurfing and kite surfing crew. Ostende is blessed with great wind off the North Sea and these activity tourists are a year round sight. Interesting attractions in and around the city include: Casino; Fort Napoleon; James Ensor museum; Sea-Side Esplanade; The Mercator (tall ship); St Petrus and St Paulus Church.
