Ostrava. Pop. 318,726. Currency - Czech Koruna. Language – Czech. Time Zone - GMT + 1 hours. Ostrava is the third largest city in the Czech Republic and is the political centre of the Moravian-Silesian Region. In 1763, large seams of black coal were discovered, which created an industrial boom. This was followed by the creation of large coal mines and a steel works. Most of the coals mines have now closed but Nová hu (the "New Steel Works", established in 1951), remains and now belongs to the international metals company, Mittal Steel. Although not perceived to be a tourism centre Ostrava has some interesting sights including: Museum of mining; Stodolni street; New city hall viewing tower; Silesian-Ostrava Castle; and Stromovka park.
