Ostrava. Pop. 318,726. Currency - Czech Koruna. Language – Czech. Time Zone - GMT + 1 hours. Ostrava is the third largest city in the Czech Republic and is the political centre of the Moravian-Silesian Region. In 1763, large seams of black coal were discovered, which created an industrial boom. This was followed by the creation of large coal mines and a steel works. Most of the coals mines have now closed but Nová hu (the "New Steel Works", established in 1951), remains and now belongs to the international metals company, Mittal Steel. Although not perceived to be a tourism centre Ostrava has some interesting sights including: Museum of mining; Stodolni street; New city hall viewing tower; Silesian-Ostrava Castle; and Stromovka park.

Moravian-Silesian Region, or Moravo-Silesian Region, is an administrative unit (kraj) of the Czech Republic, located in the north-eastern part of its historical region of Moravia and in most of the Czech part of the historical region of Silesia.
Ostrava is the third largest city in the Czech Republic and the administrative center of the Moravian-Silesian Region and of the Municipality with Extended Competence. It is located at the confluence of the Ostravice, Oder and Opava rivers. Its history and growth have been largely affected by exploitation and further usage of the high quality black coal deposits discovered in the locality.
