Ottawa Pop. 812,129. Province Ontario ON. Currency Canadian Dollar, Language English. Time Zone GMT minus 5 hours. Main Airport Macdonald-Cartier International Airport YOW. Best time to go Summer is a good time to visit especially for outdoor pursuits in the locality. Ottawa is the capital of Canada and is a bilingual city with English and French spoken throughout. Ottawa started off as a small timber settlement on the Ottawa River in Southern Ontario. In 1857, Queen Victoria chose Ottawa as the capital of Canada, a somewhat controversial choice as Toronto and Montreal were, and still are, Canada's largest cities. The early timber industry has been largely superseded by public service, travel and tourism and the high-tech industry. Nortel Networks, a company that constructed much of the backbone of the world's internet, maintains large research and development facilities near the city. Places and things to see and in Ottawa include: ByWard Market (the area's most popular shopping district); Bytown Museum (focus on Ottawa's early history); and Ottawa Senators Ice Hockey Team. Also, due to it's status as capital city there are many national attractions located in Ottawa including: Parliament Hill; the National Library and Archives; the National Gallery; as well as the Museums of Civilization, Contemporary Photography, Nature, War and Science & Technology. From the above the primary attraction is Parliament Hill - Canada's house of democracy which is located in the middle of downtown Ottawa, overlooking the Ottawa River. The building is a fine example of the Gothic revivalist style, and makes an good starting point to visit all other points of interest in the area.
