Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (IATA: YOW, ICAO: CYOW), is situated in Riverside South, 5.5 NM (10.2 km; 6.3 miles) south of downtown Ottawa. The airport is named after Sirs John A. Macdonald (the first Prime Minister of Canada) and George-Étienne Cartier (French-Canadian statesman and Father of Confederation). It is Canada's 6th busiest airport by airline passenger traffic with over 4 million passenger movements annually. In 2003, the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport Authority (OMCIAA) opened a new passenger terminal building which has a strong locl cultural theme including a very rare traditional birch bark canoe built by a master craftsman and Algonquin leader. The airport has won a number of awards - In February 2010, Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport was recognized by customers for its excellent customer service in the results of Airports Council International's (ACI) Airport Service Quality (ASQ) program. Ground transportation is provide mainly by the OC Transpo bus route 97 which uses a dedicated transitway with connections to the O-Train and other bus stations. A light rail link is currently being scoped.
