Petra was the capital of the Nabataean kingdom from about the 6th century BC and was then absorbed into the Roman Empire around AD 106. The Romans continued to develop the city. The city first came to light to a worldwide audience when the Swiss explorer, Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, explored the city in 1812. He was followed by Scottish artist, David Roberts, who produced detailed drawings of the city. Petra found new fame when it featured in the movie, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. It is the number one attraction in Jordan and attracts thousands of tour parties. Indeed tour groups are now travelling directly to Petra from Israel and Egypt.
