Phnom Penh. Pop. 2,000,064. Currency Cambodian Riel. Language Khmer language. Time Zone – GMT + 7 hours. Main Airport Kansai International Airport PNH. Best Time to go – November through February which avoids most of the hot and wet seasonal weather. Phnom Penh is located in the south of Cambodia, at the confluence of the Tonlé Sap, Mekong and Bassac Rivers. The city was once known as the "Pearl of Asia" largely due to french colonial influences which began in the 1870s. These influences have resulted in beautiful wide boulevards, fine colonial architecture and a parklike riverfront with cafés and restaurants. Specific sites to visit include: Sisowath Quay aka Riverside (boulevard running along the banks of the Mekong and Tonle Sap); The Royal Palace (home to the Silver Pagoda); The National Museum of Cambodia (art from Cambodia's "golden age" of Angkor); and Wat Phnom (means "Hill Temple"). On a more gruesome note there are a number of sites connected with the Khmer Rouge regime from the 1970s. The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21 Prison) is one such site. The other infamous site is The Killing Fields of Cheoung Ek, situated 17 km south of Phnom Penh.
