Phuket. Pop. 287,587. Capital Phuket City. Area 529 square kms. Language Thai. Time Zone – GMT + 7 Hours. One of the southern provinces of Thailand and the country’s biggest island. The island is located in the Andaman sea, which is part of the Indian ocean. Phuket is mainly mountainous and also heavily forested with sandy beaches running down it’s western coast including Patong Beach, one of the most popular tourist areas in Phuket. South of Patong there are other popular beaches including Karon, Kata, Kata Noi and Bang Tao. The economy of Phuket is centered on rubber tree plantations and tourism. The Phuket tourism trade was badly affected by the 2004 tsunami, which caused extensive damage to many of the communities and tourist resorts on the western coast. However, by the end of 2005 large parts of the tourist industry were back in business and visitors were returning to enjoy the spectacular scenery, tropical sunsets and warm blue seas that make Phuket famous.
