Podgorica. Pop. 169,132. Currency - Euro. Language Serbian and Montenegrin. Time Zone GMT + 2 hours. Main airport Podgorica TGD. Best Time to go Springtime and late Summer as the summer temperatures can top 40 degrees Celsius. Podgorica is the capital and largest city in Montengro. The city gets its name from "under the Gorica" in the Montenegrin language. Gorica ("little mountain") is the name of the hill that overlooks the city. Podgorica is at the crossroads of a number of historically strategic trade routes, near the rivers Zeta, Moraa, Cijevna, Ribnica, and Sitnica, in the valley of Skadar lake and near the Adriatic Sea, in fertile lowlands with a favourable climate. This advantageous position encouraged early settlement and are remains of habitation going back to the Stone Age. Much later the city suffered from bombardment during World War II and much of the historic architecture was destroyed. However, enough buildings remain for visitors including: Old Turkish town; Skaline (the stairs); Monument to King Nikola; Trg Republike (central square); St. George's church (10th century); Millennium bridge; and King Nikola's castle. The city is not known as a major tourist destination but it is only about 1 hours drive from many of the coastal and mountain resorts and many visitors use Podgorica airport.

Podgorica - wikitravel

Nazi and allied bombing during World War II destroyed most of the old architecture, so Podgorica is mostly a modern city. It is not itself considered a tourist destination, but is a hub of Montenegrin tourism, because the coastal cities and best mountain resorts are within one hour drive from the city.

Podgorica - wikipedia

Podgorica is the capital and largest city of Montenegro. Podgorica's favourable position at the confluence of the Ribnica and Moraa rivers and the meeting point of the fertile Zeta Plain and Bjelopavlii Valley has encouraged settlement.
