Gdansk. Pop. 455,830. Currency - Zloty. Language Polish. Time Zone GMT + 2 hours. Main airport Poznan Lawica, POZ. Best Time to go Summer months are best for warm temperatures but spring and autumn have less visitors. Gdansk, formerly the German city of Danzig, is an important port and ship-building city located on the Baltic Sea. The city was chosen as a venue for the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship with games to be played at the spectacular PGE Arena. In the relatively recent past the city was the birthplace of Solidarity, the labor and democracy movement that helped to bring down the Communist government in Poland. This movement was led by the charismatic leader, Lech Wasa, who was later to become Poland's first post-Communist president. During that period the famous shipyards were widely featured in international media, however the city has many other less industrial attractions and there are many fine buildings from the time of the Hanseatic League. Most of these are located along or near Ulica Duga (Long Street) and Dugi Targ (Long Market), a pedestrian thoroughfare. Sites to look out for in this area include - Upland Gate, Torture House, Prison Tower, Golden Gate, Main Town Hall, and Uphagen house. A popular gift to take home is amber, and Gdansk is often called the Amber Capital of the World. Look out for amber with embedded insects although these pieces are much more expensive.
