Warsaw. Pop. 1,706,624. Currency - Zloty. Language – Polish. Time Zone GMT + 2 hours. Main airports – Frederic Chopin Airport WAW. Best Time to go – good all year round although colder in winter. Warsaw is the capital and largest city of Poland and is located on the Vistula river in the heart of the Masovian Plain. Warsaw is often regarded as a Phoenix as it was virtually destroyed during the second world war but after a huge reconstruction operation much of the city was rebuilt by the 1950s. The city has seen rapid commercial activity and is home not only to many national institutions and government agencies, but also to many domestic and international companies. Due to recent constructions Warsaw is reckoned to be one of the tallest cities in Europe along with Frankfurt, London and Paris. Sites to visit include: Old Town; Royal Palace; Old Orangery; Botanical Gardens; Saski Garden; Skaryszewski Park; Kabacki Forest; National Museum; and The Warsaw Uprising Museum. The last location remembers the uprising in Warsaw and other parts of Poland on August 1, 1944 when resistance forces took on the German occupying armies. Most visitors are drawn to the Old Town, which is a UNESCO's World Heritage Site and dates back to the 13th century. The heart of the area is the Old Town Market Place, with its restaurants, cafés and shops. Surrounding streets feature medieval architecture such as the city walls, barbican and St. John's Cathedral. The city is also very sports orientated and it was chosen as a venue for the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship at the famous National Stadium.
