Poznan. Pop. 556,022. Currency - Zloty. Language – Polish. Time Zone GMT + 2 hours. Main airport – Poznan Lawica, POZ. Best Time to go – May through to September, other months are colder with sub-zero temperatures. Poznan is situated in western Poland and was chosen as a venue for the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship. The city was a former capital of Poland and is regarded by many as the birthplace of the Polish nation. Strategically the city is a stop on the Berlin – Moscow railway line and for many travelers is their first stop in Poland. A key site for visitors to take in is Stary Rynek, the old town square with the Town Hall as centrepiece, which has been completely re-built after major damage in World War 2. Another key site is Ostrσw Tumski (Cathedral Island), which is famous as the spot on which Poznan was founded – it is now a quiet island, with a permanent population consisting mostly of bishops, priests and monks. For fans of steam engines the city is home of Europe's last surviving steam-hauled passenger service which runs as far as the Wielkopolska National Park – an ideal day trip for steam train buffs. One note of cautions for visitors – the city is well known for its Trade Fairs, when thousands of business types descend en masse to the city. Accommodation can be quite difficult to find during these periods, and prices can tend to increase.

Travel Quote: The traveller was active; he went strenuously in search of people, of adventure, of experience. The tourist is passive; he expects interesting things to happen to him. He goes "sight-seeing". Daniel J. Boorstin.
