Qatar is a small country situated on the Qatar Peninsula which protrudes into the Persian Gulf - it has a land border with Saudi Arabia to the south. The country has been ruled by the Al Thani family since the mid-19th century - in 1995, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani became Emir (monarch). Qatar was formally a British protectorate, but became fully independent in 1971. Qatar is one of the richest countries in the world – indeed it has the world's highest GDP per capita and in 2010 was the fastest growing world economy. The wealth of Qatar is largely based on production and exports of liquefied natural gas, oil, petrochemicals, and related industries. Although oil and gas continue to be the backbone of the Qatari economy the country has been taking ambitious strides to diversify into other sectors. In 1995 the Emir founded the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development - a semi-private chartered, non-profit organization. The foundation is based on three "pillars": education, science and research, and community development. Some of the projects it has established include - Qatar Academy, Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP), Qatar Computing Research Institute, and Qatar Career Fair. The Foundation also supports project overseas – one of the most visible being the shirt sponsorship of Spanish football giants - FC Barcelona. In 2004, Qatar established a Science & Technology Park to attract and serve technology-based companies and entrepreneurs from both Qatar and overseas. Following this initiative in 2005 The Qatar Financial Centre (QFC) was established to provide legal and business infrastructure for financial services. Many of the attractions for visitors are based in the capital city Doha, these include - The Museum of Islamic Art, Mathaf Arab Museum Of Modern Art, and Souq Waqif traditional old marketplace of Qatar. Further afield there are other interesting sites such as - Al Wakrah Museum, Al Zubara Fort, and the Al-Khor watchtowers. As Qatar is surrounded by sea, watersports are very common – kite surfing is especially popular with tourists. Qataris are also very keen on football - Qatar will be the host country for the 2022 FIFA World Cup - the first time a country in the Middle East will host the tournament.
