Rio De Janeiro, (River of January) former capital and Brazil's second largest city behind Sao Paulo, is famous the world over for its beautiful beaches, carnivals, football and samba. Established in 1565 by Portuguese settlers, Rio blossomed in the 17th century after the discovery of gold and diamond mines in a nearby region. In 1808 the Portuguese royal family, fleeing the Napoleonic invasion, moved to Rio and thus the city became the first capital of a European country outside of Europe. Brazil became independent in 1822 and Rio became the capital and remained so until 1960 when the capital was moved to Brasilia. Rio De Janeiro remains Brazil's number one city for tourists with it's famous Copacabana and Ipenema beaches, the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue and the Maracana football stadium, the largest stadium in South America (now holds 95,000 but the 1950 world cup saw just under 200,000 spectators fill the stadium).
