Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (IATA: DCA, ICAO: KDCA, FAA LID: DCA) is situated 3 miles (5 km) south of the CBD Central Business District of Washington, D.C., and is the nearest proximity commercial airport to Washington. The airport is named after Ronald Reagan the 40th President of the United States (1981–1989) and the 33rd Governor of California (1967–1975). Due to a desire to both control noise and to direct traffic to the larger Dulles airport, flights are restricted to destinations within 1,250 miles (2,012 km) which inevitably restricts the range of international destinations available to the airport. The airport has 3 terminals A (opened in 1941), B and C (has 35 gates but no gate 13 possibly down to superstition). In popular culture, Dirk Pitt, hero of Clive Cussler's long running NUMA novel series, lives in a remodelled and refurbished aircraft hangar within the grounds of the airport. Ground transportation to Washington city centre is provided by Rail with a Metro stop at the airport terminals, Bus, Taxi, Airport Shuttle, and Car.
