Sao Paulo. Population - 11,000,000. Currency - Real (BRL). Language - Portuguese. Time Zone - GMT - 3 hours. Airport - Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) . Best Time to go - All year round destination although Jun - Dec are most popular. Sao Paulo is the the largest city in Brazil and one of the largest urban areas in the world. Founded in 1554 by José de Anchieta and Manoel da Nóbrega it was given city status in 1711 and throughout an economically flourishing 19th century, which saw much immigration and growth, and the industrial developments of the 20th century, Sao Paulo has firmly established itself as the cultural and economic heart of the country. A vast, sprawling city, Sao Paulo is not always beautiful. It is often said that if Rio de Janeiro is the Los Angeles of Brazil with its beauty and beaches, then Sao Paulo is the New York with its skyscrapers and multi-cultural communities. But, as with New York, to explore Sao Paulo, from its wide array of gastronomy, arts and entertainments to its never ending nightlife, is to really appreciate it. With museums such as The Museo de Arte Sacra & Jardim da Luz, shopping malls (look out for a rather interesting 'water clock' in 'Shopping Iguatemi'), street fairs and markets, and many public parks such as The Parque do Ibirapuera there is something for everyone in Sao Paulo.
