Seattle is a major seaport located on an isthmus between Puget Sound and Lake Washington, about 100 miles (160 km) south of the Canadian – USA border. The city is often referred to as the ‘Emerald City’ due to the lush evergreen forests of the surrounding area. Seattle has a dynamic industrial and cultural economy – the city is home to Boeing, Microsoft, Amazon.com, Nintendo of America, Starbucks, and the University of Washington. A number of popular musical artists and bands originated in Seattle including - Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, and Pearl Jam. The city is partitioned into a number of neighborhoods which are grouped into 3 areas - Downtown and surrounding neighborhoods, North of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, and South of Downtown and I-90. Major attractions in Seattle include - Seattle Art Museum, Pacific Science Center, Seattle Aquarium, Museum of Flight, Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, Green Lake, University of Washington Arboretum, and The Waterfront. However, the most recognized attraction in the city is The Space Needle, which was built for the 1962 World's Fair. There is an observation near the top of the Needle, where visitors can see not only the Downtown Seattle skyline, but also the Olympic and Cascade Mountains, Mount Rainier, Mount Baker, Elliott Bay and surrounding islands.
