Seoul is the capital and largest city of South Korea. It is also the third most populous metropolitan area in the world, after Greater Tokyo and Mexico City. Seoul is located in the north-west and is split by the Han River. The city is bordered by eight mountains, as well as the level lands of the Han River plain. Seoul suffers from frequent traffic jams, but visitors can get to most places via the subway system. The city is home to 5 major palaces including: Gyeongbokgung - Seoul's grandest palace and the seat of power for centuries, and Changdeokgung the seat of power between 1618-1896. Other places to see include: Boramae Park, Mt. Namsan Park, Yangjae Citizen's Forest, Mount Inwang Shrine, Namdaemun the great south gate, Seodaemun Prison, and COEX very large mall complex. Visitor activities include: betting at the Seoul horse-racing track, visiting Everland the Korean version of Disney, taking part in Tae Kwon Do - the martial art which originated in Korea. For the shoppers Seoul has a number of markets such as: Namdaemun - The largest traditional street market in Korea, Insadong - known for its art galleries and souvenir shops, and Yongsan Electronics Market.
