Shanghai Pudong International Airport (IATA: PVG, ICAO: ZSPD) is situated about 30 kilometres from the city centre in the eastern edge of Pudong District. The airport is the main international airport for Shanghai and is now a major Asia aviation hub. The airport is the 3rd busiest airport in the world for air-freight traffic. The airport opened on October 1, 1999, replacing Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport as Shanghai's principal international airport. There are 3 runways with 2 terminals with an additional 4th runway and 3rd terminal in the pipeline. Between the passenger teminals, is the Shanghai Maglev Train station which provided the world's first commercial high-speed maglev service. The maglev runs from Pudong International Airport to the Longyang Road Metro station. To aid transfers an extension of the Shanghai Metro Line 2 to Pudong International Airport is in progress. When Line 2 is completed, it will join Pudong International Airport with Shanghai Hongqiao Airport by subway.
