Shenzhen. Pop. 8,615,500. Currency Yuan. Language Cantonese. Time Zone GMT + 8 hours. Main Airport – Shenzhen Bao'an SZX. Best Time to go – spring and fall which avoids higher rainfall periods. Shenzhen is located in South China's Guangdong province, situated directly north of Hong Kong. In 1979 the city was designated the first of China's Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and the city has boomed since then. One of the principal reasons for granting Shenzhen an SEZ was it’s close proximity to Hong Kong where is served as a buffer between a more open border with Hong Kong and the rest of mainland China. Currently Shenzhen has the highest per capita income in China and, in September 2009, the Global Financial Centres Index ranked Shenzhen as fifth most important financial centre in the world after London, New York, Hong Kong and Singapore. The city is rich in attractions both new and old. There are theme parks like Window of The World, Splendid China & Chinese Folk Culture Village, and Minsk World. Parks and Gardens include: Lianhua Mountain Park; Lake of the Immortals Botanical Gardens; Mangrove National Park; and Wutong Mountain National Park. Historical sites include: Tomb of the Young Song Emperor; Dapeng Ancient Fort; and Chiwan Left Fort. If you are partial to the occasional beer on your travels, Tsing Tao is a popular Chinese beer, or sample Shenzhen's own Kingway Beer.
