The famous river Krka flows into the Adriatic just north of the town. The river also forms the centre piece of the Krka National Park. The principal attraction in Sibenik is the Cathedral of St. James, which is also on the UNESCO world heritage list. Some notable people were born in the town including: St. Nikola Tavelić (first Croatian saint); Goran Višnjić (actor on ER television series); Maksim Mrvica (pianist); Ante Rukavina (footballer); Ivo Brešan (writer). Many people would argue that the most famous person from Sibenik is Dražen Petrović a basketball player who is recognised as the trail blazer for Croatian and indeed European players performing in the NBA. Tragically, he was killed in a car crash on the German autobahn in 1993 while travelling as a passenger. Petrović was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002.

Nikola Tavelić (around 1340 - November 14, 1391) is a saint of the Catholic Church. This Franciscan missionary, who died a martyr's death in Jerusalem, was the first Croatian saint.
Dražen Petrović (October 22, 1964 – June 7, 1993) was a Croatian basketball player. A tireless shooter and prolific scorer, Petrović is arguably the most celebrated basketball player ever to emerge from Europe. He is considered the crucial part of the vanguard to the present-day mass influx of European players into the NBA.
Šibenik (Italian: Sebenico) is a historic town in Croatia, population 51,553 (2001). It is located in central Dalmatia where the river Krka flows into the Adriatic Sea. Šibenik is a political, educational, transport, industrial and tourist center of Šibenik-Knin county. Unlike other Dalmatian towns that were founded by the Illyrians, Greeks, and Romans, it is the oldest native Croatian town on the eastern shores of the Adriatic.
