Originally a small fishing community, Singapore was founded in 1819 by Sir Stamford Raffles, an official of the British East India Company, who decided it was the ideal location as a trading station. Since then it has become one of the world’s most successful and richest cities, and is often known as the Lion City. Development has continued and Singapore has developed into a major manufacturing centre, specialising in refining imported raw materials into valuable chemical, electronic, engineering, mechanical and biomedical products. Places to see in Singapore include some of the ethnic parts of town: Arab street, Chinatown, Colonial District, Orchard road Little India and Sentosa island.
