Best Time to go – spring July and August frequently exceeds 40 C. Skopje is the capital and largest city in Macedonia and is located on the Vardar River. In 1963 the city was devastated by an earthquake which killed over 1,000 people and destroyed 80% of the city. The quake ruined many cultural monuments and the rebuilding of the city was slower than anticipated. However, there are a number of significant monuments and artifacts for visitors to see including: Kale Fortress; Stone Bridge; Old Bazaar; Macedonian National Museum & Icon Gallery; Clock Tower; and Macedonia Square. If you are feeling fit try a hike up Vodno Mountain which dominates the skyline and is topped by the Millennium Cross which was erected to mark 2000 years of Christianity in the country. The cross is 66 metres high and can be seen from 30 km. Some events to mark on the visitor calendar include: Skopje Summer Festival; Skopje Jazz Festival (held in October); May Opera Evenings; and Vino Skop (Skopje Wine Festival, including wine tasting, vineyard visits, during October). The city comes alive in the evening, as locals dine in the cafés along the banks of the Vardar, before heading to the bars and live music clubs, most of which are open until 3am.

It was known in the Roman period under the name Scupi. The city developed rapidly after World War II, but this trend was interrupted in 1963 when it was hit by a disastrous earthquake.
