Slovenia is a small, forested country located between Italy and Croatia on the Adriatic Coastline. The captial and largest city is Ljubljana (Pop. 265,881). Despite being a small country it has a remarkable variety of topography from beaches on the Adriatic sea to the Julian Alps and Mount Trigalev (2,864 metres 9,396 feet) the highest point in Slovenia. The country is divied into 9 regions: Julian Alps (grand mountains on the Italian border); Ljubljana Area (The capital and surroundings); Coast and Karst (The Adriatic coastline and inland caves); Lower Styria (Maribor, Phorje, and surroundings); Savinjska (alpine valleys); Pomurje (countryside along the Mura river in the northeast); Lower Carniola (Dolenjska and Bela Krajina); Upper Carniola (Kranj and Kamniške-Savinjske Alps); and Zasavje (central Slovenia, east of the capital). The main cities and towns are: Ljubljana (Capital); Maribor (2nd Largest City); Piran (Port); Portorož (Tourist City on Coast); Koper (Port); Izola (Port); Celje (Old City); Kranj (Close to Ljubljana Airport); Nova Gorica (Near Italian Border); Novo Mesto (Near Gorjanci mountains); Ptuj (Old City with Castle); Slovenj Gradec (birthplace of composer Hugo Wolf); and Velenje (Industrial Town). Some other notable locations include: Lake Bled (romantic mountain lake complete with castle and island); Postojna (Home of large caves); and Triglav National Park. Slovenia has built up a strong economy and was the most productive of the former Yugoslav republics.
