Sofia is the capital and largest city in Bulgaria. It is located at the base of the Vitosha mountain and the city is ringed with other mountains. Sofia is one of the oldest European capital cities with the remains of a settlement going back as far as the 8th century BC. when the Thracians established a town called Serdica. In the 14th century Sofia was annexed by the Ottoman Empire a reign which lasted until the 19th century when the city was liberated by Russian forces in 1878.
