The Westin St Francis is a 610 room Hotel located in Powell Street, near Union Square, arguably the hub of San Francisco commercial and business life. The hotel first opened for business in 1904. During the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and subsequent fire the St Francis was one of the few buildings in the Union Square area still standing, and after only 19 months the fire damage was repaired and the hotel re-opened. To this day the hotel retains its accolade of one of the last survivors of colorful, turn-of-the-century San Francisco. The Transamerica Pyramid is the tallest and most recognizable skyscraper in the San Francisco skyline. Built on the location of the historic Montgomery Block, it has a structural height of 260 meters (853 feet) and contains 48 floors of retail and office space. Construction began in 1969 and finished in 1972.
Lombard Street is best known for one block on Russian Hill between Hyde and Leavenworth Streets, in which the roadway has eight sharp turns (or switchbacks) that have earned the street the distinction of being "the crookedest [most winding] street in the United States."
The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was a major earthquake that struck San Francisco and the coast of northern California at 5:12 A.M. on Wednesday, April 18, 1906. The earthquake and resulting fire is remembered as one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the United States. The toll from the earthquake and resulting fire represents the greatest loss of life from a natural disaster in California's history.
