During the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and subsequent fire the St Francis was one of the few buildings in the Union Square area still standing, and after only 19 months the fire damage was repaired and the hotel re-opened. To this day the hotel retains its accolade of one of the last survivors of colorful, turn-of-the-century San Francisco.
