Stirling. Pop. 41,243. Language English. Best Time To Go – Late Spring and Summer. Stirling is located in Central Scotland and close to Scotland’s two largest cities – Glasgow and Edinburgh. Stirling was a former capital of the Kingdom of Scotland and this coupled with it’s strategic position and prominent castle gave Stirling a prominent role in the historical struggle for control of Scotland. As a result of this Stirling is the site of two famous battles during the war of independence – Stirling Bridge (1297) and Bannockburn (1314). Stirling developed as a market town and is on the edge of one of the most productive and flattest areas of land in Scotland – The Carse. The development of the University and related institutions has created a strong academic population in Stirling and the University has been very successful at attracting overseas students. Other important commercial activities include financial services and tourism. Places to see include: Stirling Castle, Battle of Bannockburn Heritage Centre, Wallace Monument, Old Town Jail, Stirling Bridge, Smith Gallery, and Settle Inn (Stirling’s Oldest Ale House).
