The Sukhumvit area reflects the modern Bangkok from high rise apartments to air-conditioned shopping centres, stylish boutiques, restaurants and hotels. Once notorious for its traffic congestion things have greatly improved with the introduction of the Bangkok sky-train (overhead railway) and new expressway routes. Sukhumvit road is the main commercial street in Bangkok. It stretches for tens of kilometers in Bangkok alone, starting in an easterly direction from where it changes its name to Ploenchit Road (nearby Ploenchit Skytrain station). To the East beyond Bangkok the road continues to the cities Samut Prakan, Chachoengsao, Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat until it reaches the border with Cambodia.
