Syros. Pop. over 20,000. An island in the Cyclades, south east of Athens. The principal towns are the capital Hermoupolis and Ano Syros. Syros is located close to Piraeus and Athens (the trip by ferry takes only 4 hours). There are also connections by ferry with Rafina, Paros, Naxos, Tinos, Mykonos, Ios, Santorini, and other Cycladic islands. It is also connected with Athens by plane. The largest town, Hermoupolis, is built on a large natural harbour and has been designed as a neoclassical settlement combining both European and Ancient Greek architecture in it’s buildings. Syros has many activities and sights for all tastes including – beaches, traditional fishing villages, churches, bars and tavernas. Syros is also famous for some confectionery delights such as Loukoumia and Halvadopitta.

Syros or Siros or Syra is a Greek island in the Cyclades, in the Aegean Sea. It is located 78 nautical miles south-east of Athens. The island features towns including Ermoupoli and Ano Syros. Ermoupoli is the capital of the island and the Cyclades. It has always been a significant port town, and during the 19th century it was even more significant than Pireus.
The airport of Syros Island is located south of Ermoupolis, a few kilometres after the village of Manna. Daily flights to and from Athens are operated by Olympic Airways and three times a week Air Manos flies to Athens.
