Tenerife. Pop. 778,071. The largest island in the Spanish Canaries, which are only some 115 kilometres from the coast of Africa. Tenerife like the rest of the Canary Islands is a volcanic island, which has created a unique landscape. Surprisingly, Tenerife has the highest mountain in Spain, Teide (3,718 metres – 12,198 feet). Tenerife also has a very pleasant all year round temperate climate without extreme heat. This climate lets both tourists and locals enjoy the stunning natural beaches and recreation facilities throughout the year. The capital of Tenerife is Santa Cruz, which is a busy port situated on a large bay with a backdrop of the Anaga mountains. Santa Cruz is also one of the major stations on the cruisers route from northern Europe to the Caribbean. The main tourist areas have been centered in the south of the island in Playa de las Americas, and Los Cristianos, with recent growth in the north, around the town of Puerto de la Cruz.
