Tokyo. Pop. 12,678,395. Currency Yen. Language Japanese. Literal Name “Eastern Capital”. Time Zone – GMT + 9 hours. Airport Narita. Tokyo is the capital and largest city in Japan and is located on the middle east coast of Japan. Tokyo is the home of both the Japanese Government and The Japanese Imperial Family and is one of the world’s megacities due to it’s population being over 10 million. Tokyo is a fascinating city of contrasts with high-tech industrial plants, office complexes co-existing with temples, palaces and intricate gardens. Modern Tokyo has been designed around one of the most efficient rail systems in the world with urban rail services integrated with intercity services including the Nartia Airport Express and the Shinkansen (bullet train). There are numerous visitor attractions including: The Imperial Palace, Meiji Shrine, Tokyo National Museum and Tsukiji fish market. Visitor activities include: taking a boat ride on the Sumida River, having a soak in a “sento” or public bath, sing in a karaoke box, catch the elevated train across the Bay Bridge, watch the giants at the Ryogoku Kokugikan sumo wrestling arena, watch stunning panoramas from The Mori Tower in Roppngi Hills, and the Tokyo Tower which looks like the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Tokyo is also one of the safest cities in the world with street crime extremely rare and helpful policeman in “kobans” police boxes. Also, to assist visitors most public information signs on roads and stations are in both Japanese and English with excellent colour coding on the Metro system. As with all large cities there is a wide range of hotels to choose and it is possible to spend a fortune in Tokyo. However, for those visitors on a budget Tokyo has “ryokan” (Japanese inns) that cater largely for foreign tourists.
