Dialing code 380. Ukraine is the 2nd largest second largest country on the European continent, after the European part of Russia. It is located on the north end of the Black Sea and is bordered by Russia, Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and part of Moldova. The country is made up of 5 main areas: Central Ukraine (The political, economic, and cultural center of Ukraine, and home to the capital Kiev); Crimea (Famous peninsula with beach resorts, beautiful Black Sea coastline and mountainous interiors); Western Ukraine (Historically under the control of other European countries such as Poland, Lithuania, Hungary, and Romania); Eastern Ukraine (Home to heavy industry including steel and coal-mining region and many ethnic Russians); and Southern Ukraine (Home to the stylish city Odessa). Main cities include – Kiev, Chernihiv, Chernivtsi, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Lviv, Odessa, and Sevastopol. Some other areas of national importance are – Chernobyl, Carpathian Mountains, and The Crimea. The country has a proud history which included rebuilding the county after massive destruction during the 2nd world war when millions of Ukrainians died – including over 1.4 million military personnel. Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union but formally became an independent country on August 24, 1991.
