It is named after British Captain George Vancouver, who explored the area in the 1790s, although the name Vancouver based on the Dutch town "van Coevorden". The current city is partitioned into 3 broad areas - Downtown (Central Business District-Yaletown, Stanley Park and the West End, Gastown-Chinatown), Westside (Kitsilano, South Granville, UBC and South Vancouver), and East Van (Commercial Drive, South Main, Punjabi Market). The city has a vibrant cultural and artistic tradition and this is reflected in many of the attractions including - Stanley Park, Coal Harbour Walkway, Vancouver Aquarium, Museum of Anthropology , Vancouver Art Gallery, Telus World of Science, H. R. MacMillan Space Centre, and Vancouver International Film Centre. However, arguably the standout attraction is the Vancouver skyline and the Coastal mountains rising above the city. The surrounding natural environment lends itself to a range of outdoor activities and it is possible to ski in the mountains, windsurf in the ocean, and play a round of golf all in the same day. The city was also home to the 2010 Winter Olympics with the Canadian Olympic Team finishing first with 14 gold medals. For food fans due to the large population of Chinese people in the city there are numerous Cantonese dim sum restaurants.
