Varna is a prominent tourist centre on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. It is second to Sofia (the capital) in terms of economic strength and is both an industrial and tourism hub. Industries in Varna include: ship building and repair; chemical manufacturing; and energy generation. The city is better known for it’s tourism and suburban beachfront resorts of Golden Sands, Holiday Club Riviera, Sunny Day, Constantine and Helena. Attractions include the Varna Archaeological Museum, exhibiting the Gold of Varna, the Roman Baths, the Battle of Varna Park Museum, the Naval Museum in the Italianate Villa Assareto displaying the museum ship Drazki torpedo boat, the Museum of Ethnography.

Lake Varna is the largest by volume and deepest liman or lake along the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. In 1976, when a new 12 m-deep canal crossed by the Asparuhov most began operating, the lake was dredged along the stream.
Varna is the largest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, third-largest in Bulgaria after Sofia and Plovdiv. Commonly referred to as the marine capital (or summer capital) of Bulgaria, Varna is a major tourist destination, university centre, seaport, and headquarters of the Bulgarian Navy and merchant marine, as well as the centre of Varna Province.
Varna is Bulgaria's only cruise destination. City landmarks include the Varna Archaeological Museum, exhibiting the Gold of Varna, a cache of chalcolithic grave-goods, which constitute the oldest gold treasure in the world, the large and well preserved Roman Baths.
In 1946 a decision was made and a new airport was constructed several kilometres west of the city, near the village (now town) of Aksakovo, with local people enthusiastically working on the site together with the constructors. Construction and improvement continued throughout the years, with a new terminal erected in 1972 and a new runaway in 1974.
