Versailles is located 17.1 km (10.6 miles) southwest from the centre of Paris and is a very wealthy suburb of Paris and remains an important administrative and fiscal centre. Versailles was at one time the de facto (for all intents and purposes) the capital of the French kingdom between 1682 and 1789. During this time the Palace of Versailles was expanded and became not only famous as a royal château but a symbol of the old monarchy. After the French Revolution the Palace of Versailles was used as a venue for many historical treaties such as Treaty of Paris (1783), which ended the American Revolutionary War and the Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I. The Palace and Gardens are the main attractions in Versailles and most visitors will want to see the - Chapel and Opera House, the King's and Queen's State Apartments, the Dauphin's and the Mesdames' Apartments, the Coach Museum, Trianons, and the famous Hall of Mirrors. To avoid queues a Versailles Pass is a good option especially if transport is included. Transportation is best done by rail via the 3 stations - Versailles Rive Gauche, Versailles Rive Droite and Versailles Chantiers. Versailles Rive Gauche station is the closest to the Palace – about 5 minutes walk. If you are wishing to extend your stay in Versailles there are some grand hotels that reflect the opulence of the area - Trianon Palace Hotel, Pullman Versailles Chateau Hotel, and Les Etangs De Corot Small Luxurys Hotel. However, for budget travellers there are cheaper alternatives such as - Hotel Le Home Saint Louis, Mercure Versailles Chateau Hotel, and Hotel D'Angleterre.
