Vienna. Pop. 1,600,000. Currency Euro. Language German. Time Zone GMT + 1 hours. Vienna International Airport VIE. Best Time to go – a year round location. Vienna is the capital and largest city in Austria. Located on the banks of the Danube and close to the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary and is one of Europe’s finest historical, cultural and architectural cities. Vienna was founded in 500 BC and became an important strategic and political hub culminating in the city becoming the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During the empire period the population of Vienna increased due to immigration of many Czechs and Hungarians who returned to their own countries. At it’s peak Vienna had a population of over 2 million. Due to it’s political and legislative influence Vienna developed a strong cultural and artistic heritage including theatre, opera, classical music and fine arts. In classical German theatre The Burgtheater, Akademietheater, Volkstheater Wien, and the Theater in der Josefstadt enjoy strong reputations, and opera is regularly performed at Staatsoper and the Volksoper venues. Classical concerts are performed at well known venues such as the Wiener Musikverein, home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The city is also full of classical architecture and attractions including: The Baroque Karlskirche; Karlsplatz Stadtbahn Station; Hundertwasserhaus; Millennium Tower; Leopold Museum; Vienna Botanic Gardens; The Inner City, Hofburg (Imperial Palace), Kahlenberg, Belvedere Palace, Vienna Zoo, Wiener Prater with the Risenenrad (Ferris Wheel) and not forgetting the world famous coffee houses. For football fans there is also the Ernst Happel Stadium, opened in 1931, which will host the final of EURO 2008.

Ernst Happel Stadion Euro 2008 - wikipedia

The Ernst Happel Stadium is the largest football stadium in Austria. It is the home of the Austrian national football team. Club football matches are generally limited to the domestic cup and international competitions featuring one of Vienna's top clubs, FK Austria Wien and SK Rapid Wien, as their regular stadiums are too small to host UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup matches.

Vienna - wikitravel

Vienna is famous for its coffee culture. "Let's have a coffee" is a very common phrase to hear, because despite incursions by Starbucks and Italian-style espresso bars, the Kaffeehaus is still the traditional place to drink a cup of coffee, read the newspaper, and meet friends.
