Villach is the second largest city in the southern Austrian state of Carinthia. Villach is surrounded by the mountains of the Alps which are used for skiing in winter and hiking in summer. It is located half an hour by train or car from the border to Italy or Slovenia. There are traces of human occupation in Villach stretching back to 3500 BC. Moving through the centuries, during the Napoleonic Wars, Villach was part of the Illyrian provinces of the French Empire from 1809 until 1813. Eventually Südbahn railway reached Villach in 1864, providing growth and expansion. Villach is a railway gateway within Austria, so trains go from virtually every bigger city including Vienna, Graz, Klagenfurt, Salzburg, Linz, Innsbruck and Bregenz. There are also direct connections to Munich, Venice, Ljubljana, Zagreb and Belgrade.
