Washington Dulles International Airport (IATA: IAD, ICAO: KIAD, FAA LID: IAD) is located in Dulles, Virginia, 26 miles (41.6 km) west of the CBC Central Business District of Washington, D.C. The airport is named after John Foster Dulles, The Secretary of State under Dwight D. Eisenhower. It is one is the busiest airports in the USA handling over 23 million passengers per year to over 125 worldwide destinations. The main terminal was designed in 1958 by the famous Finnish architect Eero Saarinen, and it's flowing design is highly praised for it's connection with the concept of flight and flying. Following it's opening the airport has witnessed a number of notable events such as - The first flight at Dulles arrived from Newark International Airport in New Jersey on November 19, 1962, on May 24 1976 supersonic air travel commenced between Dulles and Europe, and in 2011 Air France started using the Airbus A380 on their Paris Charles de Gaulle airport route. Ground transportation to Washington City is provided via the Dulles Access Road/Dulles Greenway (State Route 267) and State Route 28. Buses can also link with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. Works is now on schedule to connect the airport to Washington via the Silver Line of the Washington Metro by 2016.
