Best Time to go – year round location – for winter sports, and summer hiking. Wengen started off as a small farming community and has since grown to be a major winter sports resort. Wengen is home to the Lauberhorn ski races, which consist of a downhill run, a slalom, and a combined event. Wengen is a car-free resort and is accessible only either by rail using the Wengernalpbahn from Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald by changing in Kleine Scheidegg, or by cable car down from the Männlichen on the Luftseilbahn Wengen-Männlichen. Wengen has received many famous visitors over the years including composer Felix Mendelssohn who was arguably the first VIP to stay in Wengen. In celebration of this great musician there is a Mendolssohn festival in late August.

The Lauberhorn ski race (German: Lauberhornrennen) takes place annually in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland on the longest downhill run in the world. Its enormous length of about 4455 meters with ride times about 2:30 minutes (about 1 minute longer than regular downhill races) and the achievement of top speeds close to 160 km/h (highest maximum speed in the FIS world cup) is a huge challenge for all riders.

This number swells to 5,000 during summer and to 10,000 during the winter peak tourist season. Since 1930, the famous Lauberhorn ski races have been held in Wengen. The races traditionally consist of a downhill run, a slalom, and a combined event. In addition to being one of the technically most challenging downhill races, the Lauberhorn is the longest race in the FIS world cup circuit.
