Whistler Pop. 9,248. Province British Columbia BC. Currency Canadian Dollar, Language English. Time Zone GMT minus 8 hours. Nearest Main Airport Vancouver International Airport YVR. Best time to go all year round destination for winter sports and summer walking - Whistler is often referred to as a 4 seasons resort. Whistler was originally a small logging community and was known as Alta Lake. In the early 1960's 4 Vancouver businessmen saw the potential for winter sports inn the area and their intention was to create a resort that could be a contender for the 1968 Winter Olympic Games. The Games ultimately went to Grenoble in France but undeterred, after seeing the opening of the first resort, Whistler witnessed the opening of a second resort, Blackcomb, in 1980. The two resorts merged in 1988 and the current ski-ing area has 37 lifts servicing over 200 runs on two mountains and a vertical drop of over 1,500 meters (5,000 feet), Whistler-Blackcomb is the largest ski resort in North America and consistently ranks as one of the top three ski destinations in North America. The quality of the resort was endorsed by the Olympic selectors who chose Whistler as the main venue for the 2010 Winter Olympics, and the resort hosted most of the alpine, nordic, luge, skeleton, and bobsled events. During the summer months the resort attracts hikers, rock climbers, mountain bikers and rather surprisingly golfers. Along with the over 2 million annual visitors to Whistler is a population of black bears who are largely docile but have been known to open care doors and gates looking for food.
