Wroclaw was originally called Breslau (German) and is located in the region of Silesia in south western Poland. The city was chosen as a venue for the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship with games to be played at the stunning all seated and roofed Municipal Stadium. The city lies on the Oder river which flows northwards to the Baltic Sea. In July 1997, the city was heavily affected by a flood of the Oder River, and around one third of the city's area stood under water. Due to its southerly location Wroclaw is considered to be the warmest city in Poland. Summer average temperatures in the high twenties (centigrade) appear to bear this out. The city took a pounding during the second world war, but has been completely restored. Main attractions include: Cathedral of St. John the Baptist; The Rynek (central square); Town Hall; Ostrow Tumski (group of islands on the Oder River); National Museum; Opera House; Japanese Garden; and the Wroclaw Aiguille.
