Yacht Chartering Guide - Bareboat, Crewed Charters, Yacht Categories

Yacht Chartering encompasses renting/chartering a motor yacht, or sailing boat and navigating to island and/or coastal destinations – some of which will be only accessible by sea. The two principal types of charter are – Bareboat and Crewed. A Bareboat charter is one where the person or group renting the vessel skippers it themselves. It is similar to renting a self-catering property with the advantage you can take it anywhere (subject to your contract limits and sea conditions). An experienced sailor/motorboat captain is normally required for a Bareboat charter and all group members will be expected to ‘muck’ in with running the boat. For inexperienced sailors a Bareboat including a Skipper is an attractive option and much less expensive than a fully Crewed charter.

Crewed Charters:
A Crewed charter includes a captain/skipper and crew members – this ranges from a crew of two (Captain and Cook) for a 10.6 meters (35 foot) boat to a team of over 30 for a 91.4 meters (300 foot) for a Luxury Yacht. Crewed charters are normally used for the following boat categories: Super Yachts, Motor Yachts, Sailboats, and Catamarans. A crewed charter yacht can take you to some magnificent destinations. The Bay is also home to Porto Montenegro - a luxury yacht marina and a waterfront development in Tivat, Montenegro. The marina was awarded 'Superyacht marina of the year' 2015 by The Yacht Harbour Association.

A Crewed Super Yacht is typically over 50 meters (164 feet) with luxury accommodation for upwards of 12 guests in 6 cabins. Facilities include - crew quarters, designer interiors, Wi-Fi connection, Satellite TV, Zero-speed stabilisers etc. Most super yachts invariably carry an extensive range of Watersports Equipment and Toys such as : Tenders, Jetskis, Sport fishing boat, Snorkelling gear, - Scuba gear, Fishing gear, Assorted inflatables, Waterskis, Wakeboard, Kneeboard, Kayaks, Mountain bikes, Beach club equipment etc.

Motor Yachts:
A Crewed Motor Yacht will be typically 15 – 24 meters (50 – 80 feet) and can have up to 8 berths in 4 cabins.
Motor yachts typically have one or two internal combustion engines that burn either diesel fuel or gasoline. Depending on engine size and design, fuel costs may make motor yachts more expensive to operate than sailing yachts of similar sizes. Many Motor Yachts have similar levels of luxury finishing found in the larger Super or Mega Yachts with quality fixtures and bedroom fittings, particularly important for cabins and that all important good nights sleep.

Crewed sailboats typically start at around 15 meters (50 feet) 6 berths, to over 50 meters (165 feet) 12 berths, and come with a dedicated crew.
Modern luxury sailing yachts come with sophisticated gear and equipment including: computer-controlled electric winches controlling the sails; Global Positioning Systems; and solar-powered generators. The yacht that featured in the James Bond movie Skyfall was Regina – a 56 meter (183 feet) classic schooner built by Pruva Yachting, Bodrum, Turkey.

Crewed catamarans are popular charters compared to more traditional monohull sailboats due to a number of features such as: spacious sundecks; fewer stairs between cockpit and galley; more privacy in the sleeping quarters due to cabins in separate hulls; less seasickness due to better stability with a catamaran; shallower draught giving greater access to coves, bays, lagoons. Catamarans have also performed very successfully as competition racing boats. The 2013 America's cup was won by the Oracle Team USA in an AC72 class catamaran.

Events Chartering:
Yachts are also popular for corporate events and entertainment. There are 3 main charter categories - 1). Static, 2). Events, 3). Corporate: A Static charter typically has a yacht berthed for the duration of the event e.g. 4 days for MIPM in Cannes (Marché International des Professionnels d'Immobilier - International Market for Real Estate Professionals) , An Events charter has a yacht moored for shorter events e.g.  F1 Grand Prix Monaco. Corporate charters provide something different to what a hotel would offer. Yachts, especially classic sailing yachts, offer great team building opportunities.
