Zermatt. Pop. 5,687. Currency Swiss franc (CHF). Language German. Time Zone GMT + 1 hour. Nearest Airport - Zurich. Best Time to go – year round location – for winter sports, and summer hiking (avoid the month of May due to heavy construction traffic). Zermatt is a located in southern Switzerland close to the Italian border. The town is famous due to it’s proximity to the Matterhorn first climbed by Edward Whymper. Since this first ascent Zermatt grew in popularity and is now a very popular ski resort and tourist destination. Along with skiing and winter sports Zermatt is a starting point for many hikes into the surrounding mountains, including the prestigious Haute Route that eventually leads to Chamonix in France. Uniquely, the town is a combustion-engine car-free zone allowing smog free views of the Matterhorn. Most visitors reach Zermatt by cog railway train or taxi from a nearby town. Zermatt is well known throughout the world for its great skiing. The high altitude results in consistent skiing continuously up until the summer. Skiing in Zermatt is split up into four distinct areas; Sunnegga, Gornegrat, Klein Matterhorn and Schwarzsee. Uniquely, Zermatt is also a closed town, which means that non-Swiss nationals are not permitted to buy property within the area.
